Background

Born during the days when the Qabal existed as rebels against the Immortal Caliph, Malik grew up in a world of shadows and lies. Both of his parents were members of the group, his father a spy and his mother, an accomplished sahir. They raised him until their deaths during the events following the Awakening, leaving a lasting impression of the need for secrecy. When he came into his natural talents, he became one of the first student at the newly established Duqaq's School of Astronomy, and had the fortune to meet the prophet himself. What passed between them is not recorded, but some say Malik was a changed person afterwards.

In the years that followed, the young sahir excelled at his lessons, mastering various disciplines. Upon graduating, he went out into the world to seek his destiny. Along the way, he met the woman who would become his bride, Layla, the daughter of a minor Dahabi noble. The union was a happy and fortuitous one, as his new-in-laws showered them with wealth. The birth of their daughter a few years only added to their joy. However, this happiness ended when his beloved Layla died from a fever caught during a visit with his Dahabi relatives.

After this, Malik withdrew to his estate, becoming something of a recluse. He was joined by his daughter, Ravana, who was his one connection to the outside world. She acted as his messenger, bring information to and from the School of Astronomy. He might've remained a semi-hermit, had his home not been invaded by a thief. One who dallied with his daughter and stole a valuable treasure from him. The aging sahir tried to have the scoundrel brought to justice, but the authorities said witnesses placed him nowhere near Malik's estate.

So it was that his lovely daughter was sent to live with her Dahabi kin, who soon found her a suitable husband, while Malik bin Amon once more becoming involved in the day-to-day politics of the Qabal. His skills and his wisdom saw him quickly settle into a place among the upper ranks of the group. Now rumours whisper that he might be attending the Summer Court...
